What Makes This Piece Special
- Handcrafted coaster set made from hand-painted kashmiri papier-mâché — each piece has its own subtle variations.
- Designed to feel substantial and long-lasting, with a focus on quality over quantity.
- Thoughtfully sized for modern homes, so it works equally well in compact and larger spaces.
Craft Background
Kashmiri papier-mâché, or kar-e-qalamdani, dates to the 14th century when Persian artisans introduced the craft to the valley. Paper is hand-pulped, mixed with natural starch, shaped in moulds and sun-dried, then coated with gesso for a smooth painting surface. Artisans paint florals, chinar leaves and miniature motifs using ultra-fine brushes and traditional pigments. Several layers of hand-applied lacquer add sheen and durability. Because every stage is done by hand, subtle variations in pattern and finish are natural and reflect Kashmir’s enduring artistic heritage.
Styling Ideas
- Stack on a coffee table or bar cart, ready for drinks when guests arrive.
- Pair with your favourite mugs or glassware as a thoughtful gift set.
- Leave one on your bedside table to protect surfaces from night-time water glasses.
